Aria vs Attio: Self-Hosted Power Meets Beautiful Design

Last updated: February 2026

Attio is gorgeous. If you've used it, you know: it's the most beautifully designed CRM on the market. Fluid animations, thoughtful UX, and a data model flexible enough to handle almost anything. It's what modern CRM should feel like.

But Attio is also expensive, cloud-only, and closed-source. For teams that need data ownership, AI built-in, or want to avoid per-seat pricing, there's an alternative.

We built Aria as a self-hosted, open-source CRM inspired by Attio's flexibility but optimized for teams that value control over polish. This comparison will help you decide which fits your needs.

The Quick Summary

Choose Attio if: You want the most beautiful CRM on the market, need email/calendar sync out of the box, prefer fully managed SaaS, and are willing to pay $29-119/seat/month.

Choose Aria if: You want your Aria Bot to manage your CRM data, you want data ownership, need AI built into your CRM, prefer self-hosting, want to avoid per-seat pricing, and value open-source software.

Attio's Pricing (2026)

According to Attio's official pricing page and third-party reviews, here's what you'll pay:

Plan Cost What You Get
Free $0 (up to 3 users) Core CRM, basic automations, API access
Plus $29/user/month (annual) Unlimited seats, email sync, enrichment
Pro $59/user/month (annual) Advanced permissions, priority support, unlimited reporting
Enterprise $119/user/month (annual) SAML/SSO, custom onboarding, dedicated support

For a 10-person team on the Pro plan (most common for growing companies), you're looking at $590/month or $7,080/year.

That's not outrageous compared to Salesforce, but it compounds fast as you grow. At 25 users, you're paying $17,700/year. At 50 users, $35,400/year.

What Aria Costs

Aria is self-hosted and open-source. There are no per-seat fees. The only cost is hosting:

  • Small team (5-15 users): $10-20/month VPS (DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Linode)
  • Medium team (15-50 users): $40-80/month VPS
  • Large team (50+ users): $100-200/month dedicated server

Total 5-year cost for a 10-person team:

  • Attio Pro: $35,400
  • Aria on $20/month VPS: $1,200

Even if you pay a developer $3,000 to set up and maintain Aria, you're saving $31,200 over 5 years.

Where Attio is Better

Let's be honest about what Attio does better:

1. Design and User Experience

Attio is the most beautiful CRM we've ever used. The animations are smooth, the interface is intuitive, and the attention to detail is stunning. Every interaction feels polished.

Aria is functional and clean, but it's built with shadcn/ui and Tailwind, not custom-designed components. If design is your top priority, Attio wins.

2. Email and Calendar Sync

Attio syncs your Gmail or Outlook inbox and calendar automatically. Every email thread appears on the relevant contact record. Every meeting shows up in the timeline.

Aria doesn't include email sync (yet). You can integrate via API with Resend or SendGrid for sending emails, but there's no inbox sync.

3. Enrichment and Data Quality

Attio includes automatic company enrichment (logos, industry, employee count) powered by Clearbit and other sources.

Aria doesn't do enrichment. You'll need to integrate with Clearbit or Apollo.io manually if you want auto-populated company data.

4. Workflows and Automations

Attio's workflow builder is visual and powerful: trigger actions based on record changes, send Slack notifications, create tasks, update fields.

Aria's automation layer is API-based. You can build workflows using Zapier, n8n, or custom scripts, but there's no built-in visual workflow builder.

5. Support and Onboarding

Attio offers email support (Plus), priority support (Pro), and dedicated onboarding (Enterprise). They have a help center and in-app guides.

Aria is community-supported on GitHub. There's no onboarding team, no SLA, no phone support. If you need hand-holding, Attio is a safer bet.

Where Aria is Better

1. Data Ownership and Privacy

Attio is a cloud service. Your data lives on their servers, governed by their terms of service. If Attio raises prices, you have two options: pay or migrate.

Aria is self-hosted. Your data lives on your server. You control backups, access, and retention. If you're in healthcare, finance, or legal, or just care about data sovereignty, this matters.

2. AI Built Into the CRM

Attio doesn't have an AI assistant. You can use third-party tools like Zapier with ChatGPT, but there's no native AI.

Aria's AI is built-in and understands your schema:

  • Talk in plain English: "Show me all deals over $20k closing this quarter"
  • 8 read tools: Search records, get details, browse lists (auto-execute)
  • 5 write tools: Create/update/delete records, tasks, notes (require confirmation)
  • 200+ models: Claude, GPT-4o, Llama, Gemini via OpenRouter
  • Dynamic schema awareness: The AI knows your custom objects and fields

You can ask: "Which companies in Austin haven't been contacted in 60 days?", and it works.

3. Cost at Scale

Attio's per-seat pricing is fair compared to Salesforce or HubSpot, but it still compounds:

  • 10 users on Pro = $7,080/year
  • 25 users = $17,700/year
  • 50 users = $35,400/year
  • 100 users = $70,800/year

Aria costs the same for 10 users or 1,000 users: the cost of hosting. A $20/month VPS handles most teams. A $100/month server handles hundreds of users.

4. No Vendor Lock-In

Attio's data export is good, you can download everything as CSV. But if you've built workflows, automations, and integrations around Attio's API, switching is painful.

Aria is open-source. You can fork it, modify it, self-host it, or migrate to another PostgreSQL-backed CRM without permission. The code is yours.

5. Customization Without Limits

Attio is flexible, but you can't change the core logic. If you want a feature Attio doesn't support, you're stuck waiting for them to build it.

Aria is MIT-licensed. You can modify the source code, add features, change workflows, or build custom integrations. If you need something Attio doesn't offer, you can build it yourself.

6. No Per-Seat Pricing Means Better Team Collaboration

With Attio, adding a team member costs $29-119/month. That creates an incentive to restrict access ("Do we really need to give the intern a seat?").

With Aria, adding a user costs $0. Everyone on the team can have access. No artificial gates. Better collaboration.

The Agent Integration Difference

Aria is the only CRM with native Aria Bot integration. No other CRM, including Attio, lets your Aria Bot manage your customer data directly.

How it works:

  1. Go to Settings > Aria in your CRM
  2. Generate a skill file
  3. Drop it into your Aria Bot config
  4. Done. 2-minute setup.

What your agent can do:

  • Create contacts and companies
  • Update deals and move pipeline stages
  • Log notes on any record
  • Search across all your CRM data
  • Create and manage tasks
  • Access 19 API endpoint categories through the skill file

Your Aria Bot already manages your email, calendar, and messages. Now it manages your CRM too, from wherever you already talk to your agent: terminal, chat, or whatever tools you've connected.

Attio has no agent integration. You manage data manually or through their workflow builder.

What Attio and Aria Share

Both Attio and Aria are built around a flexible data model:

  • Custom objects: Beyond People, Companies, Deals, create your own object types
  • Custom attributes: Define fields with 10+ data types
  • Relationships: Link records together (one-to-many, many-to-many)
  • Views: Table, Kanban, List views with filtering and sorting

Both prioritize modern UX:

  • Keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+K command palette)
  • Inline editing
  • Bulk actions
  • Fast search

Both offer full API access:

FAQ

Does Aria support email sync?

Not yet. Email sync is planned for a future release. For now, you can integrate with email APIs (Resend, SendGrid) for sending, or use Zapier/n8n to log emails as notes.

Can I use Aria and Attio together?

Yes. Some teams use Attio for sales (email sync, workflows) and Aria for analytics and AI queries. You can sync data between them via API or Zapier.

Is Aria as beautiful as Attio?

No. Attio is the most polished CRM on the market. Aria is clean and functional (built with shadcn/ui and Tailwind), but we prioritize features and performance over design perfection.

What about backups?

You're responsible for backups since it's self-hosted. Use PostgreSQL's pg_dump or your hosting provider's automated snapshots. We recommend daily backups to S3 or Backblaze B2.

Is there a hosted version of Aria?

Yes. Sign up at aria-crm.402box.io for a hosted instance with no setup required. Same features as self-hosted. You can connect your Aria Bot and use the web UI as your frontend for everything the bot adds.

Final Thoughts

Attio is the most beautiful CRM we've ever seen. If design, email sync, and managed SaaS are non-negotiable, Attio is worth every dollar.

But beauty comes at a cost: $7,000+/year for a 10-person team, vendor lock-in, and no control over your data.

Aria trades polish for ownership. It's self-hosted, open-source, and built for teams that care more about cost efficiency and control than pixel-perfect animations.

The good news? You don't have to choose forever. Try Aria for free. If it doesn't fit, switch to Attio. Both have solid CSV import/export, so migration is straightforward.
